Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta, Georgia is an 11th-century church that has stood for nearly a thousand years. The sense of age and weight is immediate.
I visited the cathedral while traveling through Georgia, moving slowly through the space, looking at the walls more than searching for anything specific. That’s when I noticed this painting of Saint Mary of Egypt, tucked into the quiet of the church, and found myself lingering longer than I expected.
She isn’t softened or made beautiful. Her body shows hunger, time, and loss, and there’s no hiding it. One side of her is almost bare, the other wrapped in deep blue, like a life split in two. The image feels stripped down and honest, uninterested in comfort.
What stayed with me was a sense of recognition rather than awe. The painting doesn’t romanticize faith or change. It shows what it costs. Standing there, far from home, I felt like it was saying something simple and hard at the same time: transformation leaves marks, and you carry them with you.
