In the heart of Kakheti, Georgia—above the village of Ruispiri—rests Shio’s Marani, the historic monastery complex quietly holding its secrets. The main church of St. Shio still stands, surviving from the second half of the 12th century. Time has worn away most of what once surrounded it: monastic cells, small buildings, maybe even caves near the cliffs where monks once lived. What remains today are only traces and ruins—fragments of devotion, slowly fading into the earth.
When I visited this abandoned church with my family, during my journey to my wife’s homeland, I expected stillness. Instead, I found something quietly alive. Inside the church—beyond the broken stone and silence—I discovered a faded painting with candles surrounding it. Though much was worn and forgotten, those candles were fresh. Someone had been there. People still come. It still means something to them.
The place felt untouched by the noise of the world, but not untouched by memory. It was as if the past and present met in that room—the ruin and the reverence, the abandonment and the belief. Standing there with my family, looking at that painting lit softly by candlelight, I felt the weight of centuries… and the gentle proof that faith never completely disappears. Even in ruins, something remains standing.
